More than 4,000 people have been evacuated so far as a result of what government sources call the largest disaster in recent history. The region has suffered unprecedented rainfall in recent weeks and the governments of Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina have declared a state of emergency.

Although the water has receded in some areas, thousands are still waiting to be rescued from their homes and many are confined in insecure conditions.
